Sugar-Free Apple and Carrot Waffles: Soft Finger Food for Your Baby
A Gentle Start to Finger Food
These soft apple and carrot waffles are a wonderful way to gently introduce your child to new textures. They are excellent as a first finger food for little explorers, as they are easy to grasp and mash with their gums. The natural sweetness from the fruit and vegetables makes them a delicious snack for in-between meals.
Ingredients
For about 2 to 3 portions, you will need the following ingredients:
- 1 small apple (approx. 100 g, peeled and finely grated)
- 1 small carrot (approx. 50 g, peeled and very finely grated)
- 100 g spelt flour (or plain wheat flour)
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 2 tbsp canola oil (plus a little extra for the waffle maker)
- 120 ml water or unsweetened oat drink
- 1 pinch of Ceylon cinnamon (optional, very mild)
Preparation
- Peel the apple and carrot, then grate them very finely. The finer the shreds, the softer the finished waffle will be for your child.
- Mix the spelt flour, baking powder, and cinnamon in a bowl. Add the finely grated apple and carrot, the canola oil, and the water.
- Stir everything quickly with a spoon or whisk until a smooth, slightly thick batter forms. Let the batter rest for about 5 minutes.
- Lightly oil a waffle maker and preheat it on a medium setting. Place one to two tablespoons of batter in the center and bake for about 4 to 5 minutes until golden brown and cooked through.
- Let the waffles cool completely on a wire rack. Always check the temperature inside the waffle carefully before offering it to your child.
Variations & Tips
- Vary the vegetables: The carrot can easily be replaced with finely grated zucchini or a little mashed banana.
- Storage: The waffles stay fresh in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. They also freeze exceptionally well and can be thawed individually in the toaster as needed.
- Adjusting the texture: For babies just starting with finger food, you can cut off the edges of the waffle and offer only the very soft center in finger-thick strips.
- For the family: Older children and adults can enjoy the waffles with a little maple syrup, yogurt, or fresh fruit compote.
Allergy & Safety Information
It is best to introduce new ingredients like spelt flour (which contains gluten) one at a time and in small amounts. This allows you to observe how your child reacts. Ensure your child is sitting upright while eating, and always stay close by.
Avoid adding any sugar, salt, or honey during the first year of life. If you have any concerns about introducing solid foods or possible allergies, please speak with your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
These soft waffles provide your child with valuable energy from the complex carbohydrates in the spelt flour. The carrot supplies important beta-carotene, while the apple contributes gentle fiber for good digestion. The canola oil helps the body optimally absorb the fat-soluble vitamins from the vegetables.
