Sugar-Free Banana Dough Weckmänner for Babies
St. Martin's Day is a wonderful celebration that families love to mark with traditional baked goods. These soft little dough men are made entirely without refined sugar, getting their mild sweetness solely from ripe bananas. The fluffy yeast dough is easy for toothless gums to mash. It makes a fantastic finger food for your baby's first lantern festival, once they are ready for solid textures.
Ingredients
- 150 g spelt flour (light)
- 1 very ripe banana (about 100 g)
- 30 ml lukewarm water or unsweetened oat drink
- 1 tsp active dry yeast
- 1 tbsp canola oil
Preparation
- Mash the ripe banana in a bowl with a fork until it forms a smooth, fine puree.
- Stir the lukewarm water and dry yeast into the mashed banana and let it sit briefly.
- Add the spelt flour and canola oil, kneading everything into a smooth dough.
- Cover the dough and let it rest in a warm place for about an hour until it has visibly doubled in size.
- Divide the dough into two or three portions and shape them into little men.
- Place the Weckmänner on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius (standard top and bottom heat) for 12 to 15 minutes.
- Let the baked goods cool completely and always check the internal temperature before offering them to your child.
Variations and Tips
- You can easily swap the mashed banana for unsweetened applesauce. This gives the dough a lovely fruity note.
- These Weckmänner freeze beautifully. They keep in the freezer for up to three months and can be thawed individually as needed.
- Many children start with very smooth, fine vegetable purees around five months of age. Once your child shows an interest in soft finger foods, these baked treats are a great addition.
- For older children or parents, you can add a pinch of cinnamon to the dough or use raisins for the eyes.
Allergy and Safety Notes
- This recipe contains gluten (spelt flour).
- Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily monitor for any reactions.
- Never leave your child unattended while eating, and make sure they are sitting completely upright.
- If you have any uncertainties about starting solid foods or your child's readiness for finger foods, please speak with your pediatrician.
