Summer Blackberry and Peach Spelt Puree

This fruity puree combines sweet summer peaches with fresh blackberries and filling spelt flakes. The texture blends down to a perfectly smooth consistency, making it a wonderful option for babies around five to six months of age. It is a great way to introduce seasonal berries into the menu without any added sugar.

Ingredients

  • 1 ripe peach (approx. 100 g)
  • 50 g fresh blackberries
  • 2 tbsp fine spelt flakes (approx. 20 g)
  • 100 ml water
  • 1 tsp canola oil (or specific baby weaning oil)

Preparation

  1. Wash, peel, and pit the peach, then cut it into small chunks. Wash the blackberries thoroughly.
  2. Place the fruit and water into a small saucepan. Bring to a gentle boil and let it simmer for about five minutes until the fruit is very soft.
  3. Stir in the spelt flakes and let the mixture simmer for one more minute. Remove the pot from the heat.
  4. Blend the mixture very finely using an immersion blender. To remove the small blackberry seeds, press the puree through a fine mesh sieve.
  5. Finally, stir in the canola oil. Allow the puree to cool down completely and always check the temperature before feeding your child.

Variations & Tips

  • Peaches can easily be swapped out for mild pears or nectarines.
  • For the very first tastes, you can leave out the spelt and offer a simple fruit puree instead.
  • The puree stays fresh in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. It also freezes beautifully in ice cube trays for easy portioning.
  • Parents can enjoy any leftover puree as a delicious, fruity topping for their own oatmeal or yogurt.

Allergy and Safety Information

Spelt contains gluten. Introduce gluten and new fruits one at a time and in small amounts (often called the three-day rule). This gives you a chance to monitor how your child reacts.

For babies just starting solids, it is important that the puree is completely smooth. Pushing the berry mixture through a sieve is a vital step to ensure there are no seeds that could pose a choking hazard.

If you have any questions about starting solids or potential food allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutrition Information

This puree provides a wonderful mix of essential vitamins and minerals. Peaches are gentle on the tummy, while blackberries add a great boost of vitamin C. The spelt flakes supply valuable iron and fiber. The vitamin C from the fruit actively helps the body absorb the plant-based iron from the grain.
