Sun-ripened tomatoes and mild red bell peppers blend with fine cornmeal to create a warm, Mediterranean summer dish. The polenta provides a pleasantly smooth consistency that babies can easily enjoy. This vegetarian treat is full of valuable vitamins and invites your child to explore new flavors.
Ingredients
- 100 g ripe tomatoes (preferably organic)
- 100 g red bell pepper (mild and sweet)
- 20 g polenta (fine cornmeal)
- 100 ml water
- 1 tbsp canola oil (suitable for baby food)
Preparation
- Wash the tomatoes and bell pepper thoroughly under running water. Cut the vegetables into small pieces, making sure to remove the pepper seeds and the tomato stems.
- Place the vegetables and water in a small pot. Let everything simmer gently over medium heat for about ten minutes until soft.
- Whisk in the polenta. Let the mixture simmer over low heat for another three to five minutes until a thick, creamy consistency forms.
- Blend the mixture very finely with an immersion blender so that no lumps remain.
- Stir the canola oil into the warm puree at the very end. Let the portion cool down completely and always check the temperature before feeding.
Variations and Tips
- Different vegetables: You can easily swap the bell pepper for mild carrots or zucchini. This brings gentle variety to the menu.
- Storage: Stored in an airtight container, the puree keeps in the fridge for up to two days. It also freezes beautifully in ice cube trays for easy portioning.
- Adjusting texture: For older babies, you can leave the puree a bit chunkier or blend the polenta less finely.
- Family tip: With a pinch of salt, some pepper, and fresh herbs, the leftover puree makes a delicious side dish for adults.
Allergy and Safety Information
- Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts. This allows you to gently observe how your child tolerates the new foods.
- Tomatoes can sometimes cause a mild diaper rash in sensitive babies. Start with just a few spoons to see how it goes.
- If you have any questions or concerns about starting solids, it is always best to consult your pediatrician.
