Introduction
This soft apple pull-apart bread, often called monkey bread, is a wonderful experience for the whole family. Your child can actively help roll the small dough balls, which gently supports their fine motor skills. Thanks to the natural sweetness of the applesauce, this treat is a delightful addition to your family table and makes everyone want a second bite.
Ingredients
- 250 g spelt flour (or all-purpose flour)
- 100 ml lukewarm milk (cow's milk or plant-based alternative)
- 1/2 cube fresh yeast (about 20 g) or 1 packet active dry yeast
- 30 g soft butter
- 1 tbsp honey or maple syrup
- 1 pinch of salt
- 150 g unsweetened applesauce (for the coating)
- 1 tsp Ceylon cinnamon (for the coating)
- A little extra butter for greasing the pan
Preparation
- Pour the lukewarm milk into a bowl and dissolve the yeast and honey in it.
- Add the spelt flour, soft butter, and a tiny pinch of salt.
- Knead everything for about five minutes until you have a smooth, pliable dough.
- Cover the dough and let it rest in a warm place for about 45 minutes until it has visibly doubled in size.
- Grease a small baking dish or loaf pan generously with butter.
- Preheat your oven to 180 degrees Celsius (350 degrees Fahrenheit).
- Tear off small pieces of dough and roll them into bite-sized balls together with your child.
- Mix the applesauce and Ceylon cinnamon in a shallow bowl.
- Roll the dough balls through the apple-cinnamon mixture and gently layer them into the prepared pan.
- Bake the pull-apart bread for about 25 to 30 minutes until golden brown.
- Let the bread cool completely and always check the temperature before serving it to your child.
Variations & Tips
- Fruit swap: Instead of applesauce, pear puree or a mild plum jam works beautifully for the coating.
- Storage: Stored in an airtight container, the bread stays fresh for about two days at room temperature. You can also easily freeze individual portions and warm them up briefly in the oven when needed.
- Texture: For older children, you can mix a handful of finely ground nuts or soft raisins directly into the dough.
- Family tip: Adults can easily elevate their portion on the plate with a dusting of powdered sugar or a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Allergy & Safety Information
- This recipe contains gluten (flour) and dairy (butter, milk).
- Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to carefully observe any potential reactions.
- Important note on honey: Children under 12 months must not consume honey due to the risk of infant botulism.
- If you choose to add nuts: Only use finely ground nuts for toddlers, as whole or chopped nuts pose a choking hazard.
- If you have any questions about your child's diet, it is always best to speak with your pediatrician.
