Fun Family Baking

This recipe for fruity apple turnovers brings joy to the family kitchen and is wonderful for children aged three and older. While kneading, rolling out, and filling the dough together, your child playfully practices fine motor skills. The mild quark dough requires very little sweetener and, together with the apples, provides valuable energy for active afternoons.

Ingredients for Sweet Apple Turnovers

The amounts listed yield about six small turnovers, which equals two to three child-sized portions. We recommend using organic ingredients where possible.

  • 150 g low-fat quark (or Greek yogurt)
  • 4 tbsp canola oil (or soft butter)
  • 1 egg (medium size)
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup or agave nectar
  • 200 g spelt flour (type 630 or all-purpose flour)
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 2 small apples (for example Gala or Honeycrisp)
  • 0.5 tsp cinnamon
  • A little milk for brushing

Step by Step Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (top and bottom heat) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix the quark, oil, egg, and maple syrup well in a bowl until a smooth mixture is formed.
  3. Combine the spelt flour and baking powder, add to the quark mixture, and knead everything into a smooth dough.
  4. Peel and core the apples, then cut them into very small, bite-sized cubes.
  5. Toss the apple cubes in a small bowl with the cinnamon.
  6. Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface and cut out circles (about 10 cm in diameter) using a glass or a bowl.
  7. Place one tablespoon of the apple filling onto one half of each dough circle.
  8. Your child can now fold the other half of the dough over and press the edges firmly with a fork.
  9. Place the apple turnovers on the baking sheet, brush with a little milk, and bake for about 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
  10. Let the turnovers cool completely before eating and check the temperature of the filling before your child takes a bite.

Variations and Practical Tips

Fruity variation: Swap the apples for finely diced pears or sugar-free plum butter. This helps children continuously discover new flavors.

Storage: The apple turnovers will stay fresh in the refrigerator for about two to three days when stored in an airtight container. You can also easily freeze the baked turnovers and briefly reheat them in the oven when needed.

For the whole family: Adults can fill their own turnovers with additional chopped walnuts or raisins. This makes it easy to adapt the recipe to the parents' taste.

Allergy Information and Safety

This recipe contains gluten from the spelt flour, egg, and dairy products in the quark and milk. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts so you can observe your child for any potential reactions.

Ensure that nuts are only used finely ground for younger children to avoid any choking hazard. If you have any uncertainties about introducing solid foods, toddler nutrition, or possible allergies, it is best to speak with your pediatrician.

Valuable Nutrients for Your Child

These apple turnovers provide valuable dietary fiber through the spelt flour and apples, which supports good digestion. The quark contributes protein, helping with growth and bone development. Cinnamon not only adds a great flavor but also has warming properties that feel especially good on cooler days.
