Sweet No-Sugar Date and Coconut Balls
Sweet No-Sugar Date and Coconut Balls
These little energy balls consist simply of pureed dates, fine rolled oats, and shredded coconut. They are naturally sweet and provide quick energy for the playground without causing unnecessary blood sugar spikes. The soft texture is easy for children aged three and older to chew, making healthy snacking fun and appealing.
Bite-sized snacks are especially popular with toddlers and preschoolers because they are so easy to grasp. This recipe requires absolutely no added sugar, relying entirely on the natural sweetness of the dried fruit. This allows you to offer your child a delicious snack that simultaneously provides valuable building blocks for their busy day.
Ingredients
For about 2 to 3 portions (approximately 12 small balls), you will need the following ingredients, ideally organic:
- 100 g soft, pitted dates (Medjool dates work particularly well because they are very tender)
- 50 g fine rolled oats
- 30 g unsweetened almond butter (or another nut butter like cashew or hazelnut)
- 20 g shredded coconut (plus about 2 to 3 tbsp extra for rolling the finished balls)
- 1 to 2 tbsp boiling water to make the dates a bit more pliable
Preparation
- Place the pitted dates in a small bowl and pour the boiling water over them. Let everything soak for about 10 minutes so the fruit becomes nice and soft.
- Puree the dates along with the soaking water using an immersion blender until you get a smooth, sticky paste.
- Add the rolled oats, almond butter, and 20 g of shredded coconut to the date mixture. Knead the ingredients very well with your hands until a cohesive dough forms.
- Shape the dough into small, bite-sized balls. Children often love to help with this step.
- Roll the shaped balls in the remaining shredded coconut until they are completely covered.
- Let the balls cool down completely and check the temperature before feeding, as the center might still be warm from the hot water.
Variations & Tips
- Fruity twist: Swap half of the dates for soft, unsulfured dried apricots to introduce a slightly tart flavor profile.
- Different coating: Instead of shredded coconut, you can roll the balls in ground tiger nuts or hulled hemp seeds.
- Storage: Kept in an airtight container, the balls stay fresh in the fridge for about 4 to 5 days without any issues.
- Freezing: You can easily freeze the finished balls in batches and thaw them individually at room temperature as needed.
- For the whole family: Parents can mix a pinch of cinnamon, a little vanilla, or pure cocoa powder into their own portion of the dough.
- Cooking together: Rolling the balls is a great fine motor exercise for children and boosts their interest in homemade food.
Allergy & Safety Information
- This recipe contains gluten (oats) and tree nuts (almond butter), which belong to the recognized food allergens.
- Always introduce new ingredients individually and in small amounts to easily monitor for any potential reactions.
- Make sure to only use finely ground nuts or smooth nut butter for children, as whole or chopped nuts pose a serious choking hazard.
- Never use honey for children under 12 months, as it can contain dangerous bacteria.
- If you have any concerns about introducing solid foods, potential allergies, or general nutrition, always consult your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
