Sweet Pumpkin and Trout Puree with Couscous for Starting Solids
Local trout (boneless) is wonderfully tender and provides valuable Omega-3 fatty acids for brain development. Combined with mild pumpkin and softly swelled couscous, this puree becomes especially creamy and is often well-accepted by babies. This combination is a wonderful choice for a gentle start into the world of solid foods.
Ingredients
- 100 g Hokkaido pumpkin (cleaned and diced)
- 30 g fresh trout fillet (absolutely boneless, organic if possible)
- 1 tbsp couscous
- 1 tbsp canola oil (specifically for baby food)
- Approx. 30 to 50 ml water (to adjust consistency)
Preparation
- Wash the pumpkin, remove the seeds, and cut it into small cubes.
- Check the trout fillet thoroughly for bones again and cut it into small pieces.
- Steam the pumpkin in a small pot with a little water for about 10 minutes until soft.
- After 5 minutes, add the fish pieces and let them cook completely through.
- Pour 3 tablespoons of boiling water over the couscous and let it swell for 5 minutes.
- Place the pumpkin, fish, couscous, canola oil, and a little cooking water into a tall container.
- Puree everything until a very smooth, creamy consistency is reached.
- Let the puree cool down and always test the temperature before feeding your child.
Variations and Tips
- Instead of pumpkin, you can easily use mild carrots or sweet potatoes.
- The puree can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days.
- You can easily freeze the puree in ice cube trays and thaw it in small portions.
- For the very first tastes, a few spoonfuls are entirely sufficient, as breast milk or formula remains the main source of nutrition.
Allergy and Safety Information
- Fish and wheat (in the couscous) are among the more common allergens. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts. Observe your child over the following days.
- Pay strict attention to ensuring the fish is completely boneless and fully cooked. Raw fish is not safe for babies.
- If you have any concerns about introducing solids or potential allergies, please consult your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
This puree provides valuable Omega-3 fatty acids from the trout, which are highly beneficial during this developmental phase. The pumpkin adds important beta-carotene. The canola oil helps the body absorb these fat-soluble vitamins optimally.
