Tender Couscous and Apple Balls for Toddlers

Snacks12+m 35 min 4 VeganEasy
Contains: Gluten, Tree nuts

Introduction

These tender couscous and apple balls are an ideal snack for the family table and perfect for little hands. The combination of soft couscous and fruity apple provides valuable energy, while the fine texture gently supports independent eating. It is a wonderful recipe that parents and children enjoy together, fitting effortlessly into a varied daily routine.

Ingredients

  • 100 g couscous (whole grain if preferred)
  • 150 ml boiling water
  • 100 g unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 small apple, grated
  • 1 tbsp smooth almond butter (unsalted, 100 percent nuts)
  • 1 tsp rapeseed oil
  • 1 pinch of Ceylon cinnamon

Preparation

  1. Pour the boiling water over the couscous in a heatproof bowl. Cover the bowl and let the couscous swell for about 10 minutes.
  2. Add the grated apple, applesauce, almond butter, rapeseed oil, and a pinch of cinnamon to the couscous. Mix everything thoroughly until a smooth, slightly sticky dough forms.
  3. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (top and bottom heat) and line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  4. Wet your hands slightly, form small, bite-sized balls from the mixture, and place them on the baking tray.
  5. Bake the balls in the oven for about 15 minutes until they are lightly golden.
  6. Let the balls cool down completely after baking. Always check the temperature inside before offering them to your child.

Variations and Tips

  • Fruity twist: Simply swap the apple for a ripe, mashed pear for a different flavor profile.
  • Storage: The baked balls keep well in an airtight container in the fridge for about two days. They also freeze beautifully for up to three months.
  • Adjusting texture: For children who are still practicing their grip, you can shape the mixture into small, flat patties instead of balls.
  • For the whole family: Parents can easily elevate their own portion by drizzling a little honey or yogurt on top after baking.

Allergy and Safety Information

  • This recipe contains gluten (couscous) and tree nuts (almond butter). Introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts.
  • Only offer nuts to young children in finely ground form or as a smooth butter, as whole nuts pose a choking hazard.
  • Honey is safe for children over 12 months. However, it is strictly forbidden for infants under one year due to the risk of infant botulism.
  • If you have any uncertainties about your child's diet or introducing new foods, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

This dish provides valuable carbohydrates from the couscous, offering sustained energy for active days. The apple adds gentle dietary fiber and vitamin C, while the almond butter contributes healthy fats. It is a well-rounded combination that wonderfully supports growing explorers at the family table.
