Two-Tone Checkerboard Cookies: Baking Fun for Kids 3 and Up
Introduction
Baking with children is a wonderful experience for the whole family. These two-tone checkerboard cookies are ideal for little bakers aged three and up, as the precise cutting and assembling playfully support hand-eye coordination. Having fun together in the kitchen also creates lovely memories and sparks curiosity about new ingredients.
Ingredients
- 250 g spelt flour (preferably organic)
- 100 g soft butter
- 60 g coconut sugar or raw cane sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 2 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tbsp milk
Preparation
- Knead the flour, soft butter, sugar, and egg in a large bowl to form a smooth dough.
- Divide the dough into two equal halves.
- Work the vanilla extract into one half until a smooth, light mixture forms.
- Knead the cocoa powder and milk into the other half until the dough is dark and pliable.
- Wrap both dough balls in cling film and let them rest in the refrigerator for about 30 minutes.
- After cooling, shape both doughs into square logs of equal thickness, about 1.5 cm thick.
- Cut the logs in half lengthwise and assemble them, alternating light and dark, to create a checkerboard pattern.
- Chill the assembled block for another 15 minutes so it is easier to slice later.
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius on conventional heating.
- Cut the dough block into slices about 5 mm thick and place them on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
- Bake the cookies for 10 to 12 minutes until the light parts are slightly golden brown.
- Let them cool completely on a wire rack and check the temperature before letting your child taste them.
Variations & Tips
- Fruity twist: Replace the cocoa powder with a little freeze-dried raspberry powder for a pink-and-white checkerboard.
- Storage: Stored in an airtight tin, the cookies will keep at room temperature for about two to three weeks.
- Freezing: The raw dough block freezes beautifully for up to three months and can be sliced and baked fresh when needed.
- Family tip: For the adults, you can refine half of the dough with a pinch of cinnamon or cardamom.
Allergy and Safety Information
This recipe contains the EU allergens wheat (spelt), egg, and milk. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions.
Whole nuts are a choking hazard for children under five, which is why this recipe intentionally avoids them. If you have any uncertainties about your child's diet or potential allergies, it is best to speak with your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
Spelt flour provides valuable fiber, which supports healthy digestion. The included egg offers high-quality protein, playing an important role for growth at this age. Thanks to the moderate sweetness, blood sugar levels remain more stable compared to traditional, heavily sweetened treats.
