Vegetarischer Rote-Linsen-Brei mit Möhren und Kartoffeln

Vegetarian Red Lentil Mash with Carrots and Potatoes

Solids intro5+m 25 min 4 VeganEasy

Introduction

Starting solids is an exciting milestone for your family. Many parents look forward to offering their baby those very first spoonfuls of solid food. Red lentils are wonderful for this early stage, as they are exceptionally easy to digest and provide plenty of plant-based iron. Paired with mild carrots and potatoes, they create a smooth, filling puree for your child. This vegetarian mash is a wonderful change from plain vegetable purees and brings new, gentle flavors to the menu. A splash of high-quality rapeseed oil completes the meal and helps with essential vitamin absorption.

Ingredients

  • 50 g red lentils (rinsed well before cooking)
  • 100 g carrots (about one medium carrot)
  • 50 g potatoes (about one small potato)
  • approx. 250 ml water (to reach the right consistency)
  • 2 tbsp baby-friendly oil (such as a mild rapeseed oil)

Preparation

  1. Rinse the red lentils thoroughly in a fine mesh sieve under cold running water. Wash the lentils until the water runs completely clear.
  2. Scrub or wash the carrots and potatoes under water. Then peel the vegetables and cut them into fine, even cubes.
  3. Place the prepared vegetables, the drained lentils, and the water into a small pot. Bring everything to a gentle boil on the stove.
  4. Reduce the heat and let the ingredients simmer softly at a medium temperature for about 15 minutes. Check with a fork to ensure the lentils and vegetables are very soft.
  5. Add the baby-friendly oil and blend the entire mixture using an immersion blender. Blend until you achieve a very fine, smooth puree with absolutely no lumps.
  6. Allow the finished mash to cool down to a comfortable eating temperature. Always test the warmth on your wrist before feeding your child.

Variations & Tips

  • Instead of carrots, you can easily use parsnips, zucchini, or pumpkin for this recipe. These vegetables also have a mild taste and are well-received by many babies.
  • The mash is great for meal prep and stays fresh in a tightly sealed container in the fridge for up to two days.
  • This puree freezes beautifully, ensuring you always have a portion ready. Portion the mash into ice cube trays or special freezer-safe containers for baby food.
  • For older toddlers who are already comfortable with textures, you can easily adjust the consistency. Simply mash the soft-cooked vegetables with a fork instead of blending them completely smooth.

Allergy & Safety Notes

  • Always introduce new foods to your child one at a time and initially in small amounts. This allows you to carefully observe and identify any potential reactions.
  • This recipe is completely free from major allergens like cow's milk, eggs, soy, or nuts.
  • Pay special attention to ensuring the puree is extremely smooth and finely blended for those very first attempts at eating.
  • If you have any concerns about starting solids or specific foods, always consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

  • Red lentils are an excellent source of plant-based iron and also provide important protein for growth. The carrots contain plenty of beta-carotene, which the body effectively converts into vitamin A. By consciously adding rapeseed oil, your child can optimally absorb and utilize these fat-soluble vitamins.
