Contains: Gluten, Dairy

Introduction

This dish brings a healthy fast food experience right to the family table and delights children from age three. The combination of iron rich beef, fiber packed whole wheat buns, and vitamin rich sweet potatoes provides plenty of energy for active days. It is great fun when each family member gets to build their own burger.

Ingredients

  • 3 whole wheat burger buns
  • 300 g ground beef (organic preferred)
  • 1 medium sweet potato (approx. 300 g)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 pinch mild paprika
  • 1 pinch salt (use very sparingly)
  • 1 tsp dried herbs (like oregano or thyme)
  • For toppings: 3 mild lettuce leaves, 1 tomato, a little mild yogurt sauce

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (standard bake).
  2. Peel the sweet potato and cut it into even, finger thick sticks.
  3. In a bowl, toss the sweet potato sticks with one tablespoon of olive oil, paprika, and the herbs.
  4. Spread the fries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for about 20 to 25 minutes until crispy.
  5. Meanwhile, use wet hands to shape the ground beef into three flat patties.
  6. Heat one tablespoon of olive oil in a pan and cook the patties over medium heat for about 4 to 5 minutes on each side until fully cooked through.
  7. Briefly warm the whole wheat buns in the oven or toaster and slice them open.
  8. Assemble the burgers with a little yogurt sauce, lettuce, tomato slices, and the patty.
  9. Let everything cool slightly before serving and check the temperature so your child does not burn their mouth.

Variations and Tips

  • Hide some veggies: You can knead some finely grated carrot or zucchini directly into the ground beef mixture.
  • Vegetarian alternative: The beef can easily be swapped for patties made from black beans or oats.
  • Storage: Cooked patties keep in the fridge for about two days and are also very freezer friendly.
  • For the parents: Adults can upgrade their burgers with sharp cheese, onions, or a spicy sauce.

Allergy and Safety Notes

This recipe contains gluten from the whole wheat buns and dairy in the yogurt sauce. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts. Make sure meat is always cooked completely through for young children. If you have any uncertainties about your child's diet or potential allergies, always speak with your pediatrician.

Nutritional Info

Beef is an excellent source of iron, which supports healthy cognitive development during these active years. Sweet potatoes contribute plenty of vitamin A and beta carotene to help support the immune system. The complex carbohydrates in the whole wheat buns keep your child full and satisfied for a long time.
