Whole Wheat Pizza Pinwheels with Tomato and Cheese
Introduction
These savory whole wheat pizza pinwheels are a wonderful snack for children from three years old. They provide valuable energy for active afternoons and are perfect for the lunchbox. The combination of whole grains, fruity tomatoes, and mild cheese supports a balanced diet.
Ingredients
- 250 g whole wheat flour (spelt or wheat)
- 120 ml lukewarm water
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 0.5 cube fresh yeast (about 20 g) or 1 packet active dry yeast
- 1 pinch of salt (fine in moderation for children over 3)
- 100 ml strained tomatoes
- 1 tsp mild herbs (for example oregano or basil)
- 100 g grated mild cheese (for example Gouda or mozzarella)
Preparation
- Dissolve the yeast in the lukewarm water. Add the whole wheat flour, olive oil, and a small pinch of salt.
- Knead everything into a smooth dough. Cover the dough and let it rise in a warm place for about 45 minutes.
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius (standard bake). Roll the dough out on a floured surface into a rectangle.
- Spread the strained tomatoes evenly over the dough and sprinkle with the herbs. Scatter the grated cheese on top.
- Roll the dough up tightly from the long side. Cut the roll into slices about two centimeters thick.
- Place the pinwheels on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown. Let them cool well and check the temperature before serving.
Variations and Tips
Finely grated carrots or zucchini mix wonderfully into the tomato sauce. This is an easy way to include a little extra vegetable. The pinwheels stay fresh in an airtight container in the fridge for about two days. They also freeze excellently and can be thawed individually as needed. For the adults, you can top half of the dough with olives, onions, or a little chili.
Allergy and Safety Information
This recipe contains gluten and dairy. When introducing new foods, offer them one at a time and in small amounts. If you have any uncertainties about diet or potential intolerances, it is best to speak with your pediatrician. Nuts and seeds are not included here. With young children, ensure the dough is baked through and soft enough to chew.
Nutritional Value
The whole wheat flour provides important fiber, which supports good digestion and keeps your child full. The cheese contributes valuable calcium for the bones. The tomatoes contain vitamin C, which helps absorb iron from the grains.
