Winter Kale, Potato, and Pear Puree for Babies
This winter puree combines wholesome regional vegetables with a gentle fruit component. Especially during the cooler months, seasonal vegetables offer a wonderful foundation for early taste experiences. The natural sweetness of the pear beautifully rounds off the mild kale, making the dish especially tasty for little ones.
Many children enjoy this smooth combination, which also provides important nutrients for their current developmental phase. Discovering new flavors together at the family table makes this time particularly exciting.
Ingredients
- 100 g kale (fresh, tough stems removed, ideally organic)
- 100 g potatoes (waxy or all purpose)
- 50 g pear (ripe and sweet)
- 1 tbsp canola oil (or specific baby weaning oil)
- approx. 50 ml water (for blending)
Preparation
- Peel and wash the potatoes, then cut them into small cubes. Wash the kale thoroughly and tear the leaves from the tough stems.
- Peel the pear, remove the core, and cut it into small pieces as well.
- Bring the potatoes and kale to a boil in a pot with a little water and simmer gently for about 10 minutes.
- Add the pear pieces and cook everything until soft for another 5 minutes.
- Drain the remaining cooking water and collect it in a separate container. Blend the vegetables and fruit together with the canola oil until very smooth.
- If needed, add the reserved cooking water one spoonful at a time until a smooth, creamy texture is reached. Let the puree cool down well before feeding and test the temperature on the back of your hand.
Finding the Right Texture
For those very first spoonfuls, a very fine, almost liquid texture is ideal. Blend the ingredients thoroughly and add enough water. A smooth consistency makes swallowing easier and creates a gentler transition from milk to solid food.
As your child gets used to the puree, you can slowly reduce the amount of water. Some children prefer a thicker puree, while others continue to favor a creamy texture. Simply observe what works best.
Variations and Tips
- Storage: The puree keeps well in an airtight container in the fridge for two days. It also freezes perfectly in ice cube trays for easy portioning.
- Variations: Instead of pear, a mild apple also works wonderfully as a sweet component. For slightly older children, the texture can remain chunkier by simply mashing the ingredients with a fork.
- Family Tip: Simply cook double the amount of kale and potatoes. Before blending, you can set aside a portion for the adults and season it generously with salt, pepper, and nutmeg.
Allergy and Safety Information
This recipe does not contain any of the 14 major allergens. It is always a good idea to introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts. This allows you to easily observe how your child tolerates the new ingredients.
Take your time and wait a few days before introducing the next new ingredient. If you have any uncertainties about starting solids, please speak with your pediatrician.
Nutrients for Little Explorers
Kale is a wonderful winter vegetable that provides valuable plant based iron and important vitamins like vitamin C. The pear not only adds a mild sweetness but also contains vitamin C, which optimally supports iron absorption in the body. Potatoes are pleasantly filling and provide complex carbohydrates for daily adventures.
