Winter Parsnip, Pear, and Turkey Purée

Seasonal5+m 25 min 4Easy

Sweet parsnip meets mild pear and lean turkey in this warming winter purée. The creamy texture is easy to swallow and offers an excellent source of iron. It is a classic, gentle recipe for the colder months that many children truly enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 100 g parsnip (weighed after peeling, organic if possible)
  • 50 g pear (peeled and cored, such as Bartlett)
  • 20 g turkey breast fillet
  • 1 tbsp canola oil (suitable for baby food)
  • 3 to 4 tbsp water (or unsweetened apple juice to boost iron absorption)

This recipe makes about 2 to 3 portions for the beginning of the weaning journey.

Preparation

  1. Peel the parsnip and cut it into small cubes.
  2. Peel and core the pear, then dice it as well.
  3. Rinse the turkey breast under cold water, pat dry, and cut into very small pieces.
  4. Place the parsnip and turkey in a small pot with a little water, cover, and simmer gently over medium heat for about 10 minutes.
  5. Add the diced pear and cook for another 5 minutes until everything is very soft.
  6. Carefully drain the cooking water, reserving a small amount in a cup.
  7. Add the oil and 3 to 4 tablespoons of the reserved cooking liquid, then blend everything into a very smooth, creamy purée without any chunks.
  8. Allow the purée to cool down to body temperature. Always test the temperature yourself before feeding your child.

Variations & Tips

  • Ingredient Swaps: Carrots or sweet potatoes make a wonderful substitute for parsnips in this recipe.
  • Adjusting Texture: For those very first spoonfuls, you can add a little more water to make the purée even thinner. Start with just a few spoons and increase the amount at a pace that feels comfortable for your child.
  • Storage: The purée can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. It also freezes beautifully. Portion it into clean ice cube trays for easy thawing.
  • Family Meal Idea: Buy extra turkey and parsnips to make a creamy parsnip mash with pan-seared turkey breast for the adults.

Allergy & Safety Information

Always introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential sensitivities. The three-day rule is a helpful approach here.

Ensure that all poultry is cooked thoroughly before blending. Completely avoid salt, sugar, and honey at this age. Milk remains the primary source of nutrition during this phase.

If you have any concerns about starting solid foods, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

This purée provides valuable iron from the turkey, which the body absorbs particularly well thanks to the vitamin C in the pear. Parsnips also contain gentle fibers that support healthy digestion. This combination is wonderful for meeting the growing nutritional needs during this stage of development.
