Winter Rutabaga and Potato Oat Puree for Babies

Solids intro5+m 25 min 4 VeganEasy
Contains: Gluten

Introduction

Rutabagas are a wonderful, often overlooked winter vegetable with a gentle, slightly sweet flavor. Combined with potatoes and rolled oats, they create a creamy puree that many babies truly enjoy. This comforting dish provides excellent energy for your little one's exciting daily discoveries.

Ingredients

  • 100 g rutabaga (peeled)
  • 50 g potatoes (waxy or all-purpose, peeled)
  • 1 tbsp quick oats (approx. 10 g)
  • 1 tbsp canola oil (or specific baby weaning oil, approx. 10 ml)
  • 3 to 4 tbsp water (or cooking liquid, for consistency)

Preparation

  1. Cut the peeled rutabaga and potatoes into small, evenly sized cubes.
  2. Place the vegetables in a small pot, cover them lightly with water, and bring to a boil.
  3. Reduce the heat and let them simmer gently for about 15 minutes until very soft.
  4. Stir in the quick oats about 3 minutes before the cooking time is up, letting them soften in the mixture.
  5. Drain the cooking water, making sure to reserve a small amount in a cup.
  6. Add the canola oil and blend everything into a very smooth, lump-free puree using an immersion blender, adding reserved water as needed.
  7. Allow the puree to cool down thoroughly and always test the temperature on the back of your hand before feeding.

Variations & Tips

  • Swap the veggies: The rutabaga can easily be replaced with carrots or parsnips if you want to offer a different flavor profile.
  • Storage: This puree stays fresh in the refrigerator for up to two days when kept in an airtight container.
  • Freezing: You can freeze this puree perfectly, ideally in ice cube trays for convenient, small portions.
  • Family tip: Parents can mash the leftover cooked vegetables with a pinch of salt, pepper, and nutmeg for a delicious side dish.

Allergy & Safety Information

  • Oats contain gluten, which is a recognized allergen. Introduce new ingredients individually and in very small amounts to easily monitor for any reactions.
  • Ensure the puree is completely smooth with no lumps, which is ideal for the early stages of starting solids.
  • If you have any questions or concerns about introducing solids or potential allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

This puree pairs valuable carbohydrates from potatoes with the gentle fiber found in rutabagas. The oats provide plant-based iron, which is absorbed well thanks to the vitamin C in the vegetables. The added canola oil helps the body utilize fat-soluble vitamins and provides essential fatty acids for growth.
