Knusprige Polenta-Pommes aus dem Ofen

Crispy Baked Polenta Fries for Kids

Snacks2+y 75 min 4 VeganMedium

Introduction

These crispy baked polenta fries make a wonderful snack for children aged three and up. They are easy to grasp with little hands, which gently supports fine motor skills during dipping. At the same time, the cornmeal provides great energy for active afternoons, making it a dish the whole family can enjoy together.

Ingredients

  • 100 g polenta (cornmeal, organic if possible)
  • 400 ml water or mild vegetable broth
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika
  • 1 tsp dried herbs (such as oregano or thyme)
  • A pinch of salt (acceptable in moderation for children over 3 years)

Preparation

  1. Bring the water or vegetable broth to a boil in a medium pot.
  2. Slowly pour in the polenta while stirring constantly with a whisk to prevent lumps from forming.
  3. Reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer gently for about 10 minutes until it reaches a smooth, thick consistency.
  4. Spread the thick polenta mixture about 1.5 cm thick onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and let it cool for 30 minutes.
  5. Preheat your oven to 200 degrees Celsius (top and bottom heat).
  6. Cut the firm polenta into fry-like sticks and arrange them evenly on a baking sheet.
  7. Brush the sticks with olive oil and sprinkle them with the paprika and dried herbs.
  8. Bake in the oven for about 20 minutes until they are golden and crispy.
  9. Let the polenta fries cool down well and always test the temperature before your child takes a bite.

Variations & Tips

  • Hidden Veggies: Mix some finely grated carrot or zucchini into the hot polenta mixture before letting it set.
  • Storage: The finished fries will keep in an airtight container in the fridge for about two days. You can also freeze them and simply reheat them in the oven when needed.
  • Adjusting Texture: For younger siblings, you can cut the fries a bit thicker and bake them for a shorter time so they stay extra soft on the inside.
  • For the Whole Family: Serve the fries with a zesty garlic dip or a spicy salsa for the adults.

Allergy & Safety Information

This recipe is naturally gluten-free and does not contain any of the 14 major EU allergens in its basic version. Always introduce new ingredients or spices one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions. If you have any uncertainties about introducing new foods or your child's diet, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Value

Cornmeal is an excellent source of complex carbohydrates, giving your child long-lasting energy for the day. The olive oil provides valuable unsaturated fats, which are important for healthy brain development. Additionally, the dried herbs contain mild plant compounds that can gently support digestion.
