Savory Spelt Hedgehog Rolls: Fun Baking for Kids
Baking together brings great joy to many children and gently supports their fine motor skills. These savory spelt hedgehog rolls are a wonderful way to spark a love for homemade food. The dough is easy to knead, and shaping the little hedgehogs encourages imagination.
Ingredients
- 250 g spelt flour (preferably organic)
- 120 ml lukewarm water
- 1 tsp active dry yeast (approx. 3 g)
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 pinch of salt
- 1 small carrot, finely grated (optional for extra moisture)
- A few pumpkin seeds or black sesame seeds for the eyes
Preparation
- Combine the flour, yeast, olive oil, water, salt, and the grated carrot in a mixing bowl.
- Knead the ingredients into a smooth, pliable dough until it no longer sticks to your hands.
- Cover the dough and let it rest in a warm place for about 45 minutes until it has noticeably increased in volume.
- Shape the dough into two to three oval rolls and place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Using clean kitchen scissors, snip small cuts into the top of the rolls to create the hedgehog spikes.
- Press two pumpkin seeds or sesame seeds into the dough for the eyes.
- Bake the rolls in a preheated oven at 180 degrees Celsius for about 15 to 20 minutes until golden brown.
- Let them cool down completely and always check the inside temperature before your child takes a bite.
Variations & Tips
For a colorful twist, you can mix finely grated zucchini or a little tomato paste into the dough. The rolls stay fresh in an airtight container in the fridge for two to three days. They freeze beautifully: Simply place the cooled rolls in a freezer bag and warm them up in the oven when needed. Family tip: Adults can enjoy these rolls with a savory herb quark or a generous spread of hummus.
Allergy & Safety Information
This recipe contains gluten (spelt flour). Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to monitor for any sensitivities. Whole pumpkin seeds require attentive chewing. For younger siblings, you can simply poke holes with a wooden skewer to create the eyes and avoid choking hazards. If you have any concerns about nutrition or introducing new foods, consult your pediatrician.
Nutritional Information
Spelt flour provides valuable fiber and complex carbohydrates for long-lasting energy. The optional carrots add a gentle dose of vitamin A, which supports healthy vision. This combination is satisfying and offers a nutritious foundation for active little explorers.
