Soft Baked Parsnip Fries for Early Eaters

Snacks5+m 35 min 4 VeganEasy

Introduction

Parsnips are often a big hit with early eaters because of their naturally sweet flavor. Baking them as little fries in the oven brings out a wonderful aroma and makes them incredibly soft. This makes it very easy to blend the vegetable into a perfectly smooth puree for those first spoonfuls.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium parsnips (approx. 200 g, organic if possible)
  • 1 tsp canola oil (or rapeseed oil, suitable for baby food)
  • A little water, breastmilk, or formula for blending

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius) on a standard bake setting.
  2. Wash and peel the parsnips, then cut them into sticks about the thickness of a finger.
  3. Toss the vegetable sticks in a bowl with the oil until all pieces are lightly coated.
  4. Spread the parsnip fries on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for about 20 to 25 minutes until very soft.
  5. Remove the vegetables from the oven and let them cool. For early purees, blend the soft sticks with a little liquid until a completely smooth, lump-free consistency is reached. Always test the temperature before feeding.

Variations and Tips

  • Different vegetables: You can easily swap the parsnips for carrots or sweet potatoes using the exact same method.
  • Storage: The finished puree keeps well in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two days. It also freezes beautifully in ice cube trays for easy portioning.
  • Adapting the texture: For older children who are practicing chewing, you can offer the soft baked parsnip fries whole as simple finger food.
  • For the family: Toss any leftover baked parsnips with salt, pepper, and paprika for a delicious side dish for the parents.

Allergy and Safety Information

Parsnips are generally very gentle on the tummy and do not contain any of the top common allergens. It is helpful to introduce new foods one at a time and in small amounts. This allows you to easily observe how your child responds to the new ingredient.

If you have any questions about starting solid foods, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutrition Information

Parsnips provide valuable carbohydrates that offer quick energy for a busy day of discovery. The root vegetable also contains important fiber to support comfortable digestion. The added oil helps the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins effectively.
