Baking Fun for Little Hands

Baking together is a wonderful experience for many children, engaging all their senses. With this simple recipe, little bakers can help spread the butter and roll the dough, playfully strengthening their fine motor skills. The delicious scent of cinnamon builds excitement and makes your time together in the kitchen feel especially cozy.

Ingredients

  • 1 roll of fresh puff pastry (refrigerated, approx. 275 g)
  • 2 tbsp soft butter (organic, if possible)
  • 2 tbsp raw cane sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon (Ceylon cinnamon is very mild)
  • Optional: 1 egg yolk, whisked with a splash of milk, for an egg wash

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (400 degrees Fahrenheit) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Unroll the puff pastry and lay it flat on your workspace.
  3. Spread the soft butter evenly over the pastry, leaving a small border around the edges.
  4. Mix the sugar and cinnamon in a small bowl, then sprinkle the mixture evenly over the buttered area.
  5. Roll the pastry up tightly from the long side to create a long log.
  6. Using a sharp knife, cut the log into slices about two centimeters thick.
  7. Place the snails on the baking sheet with a little space between them and bake for 12 to 15 minutes until golden brown.
  8. Let them cool completely after baking, and always check the temperature before offering them to your child.

Variations & Tips

  • Fruity variation: Instead of cinnamon and sugar, spread a thin layer of unsweetened applesauce over the dough.
  • Storage: The snails stay fresh for one to two days in an airtight container. They also freeze well and can be briefly warmed in the oven when needed.
  • For the whole family: Adults can sprinkle chopped walnuts or raisins onto their half of the pastry roll.
  • Adjusting the shape: For smaller hands, you can cut the slices a bit thinner to make them easier to hold.

Allergy & Safety Notes

This recipe contains gluten and dairy from the butter. If you use the optional egg wash, it also contains egg. Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to monitor for any reactions. Please ensure children are seated upright while eating to prevent choking. If you have any concerns about your child's diet or potential allergies, please speak with your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Puff pastry and butter provide quick energy for active afternoons. Ceylon cinnamon contains valuable essential oils that give the pastry its warming aroma. Since this recipe includes sugar, it is intended as an occasional sweet treat for children aged three and up.
