Contains: Dairy

Introduction

This warming winter dish made from local cabbage and potatoes is wonderful for children aged three and older, providing plenty of energy for active days. The savory minced meat and crispy cheese crust make the vegetables especially appealing to little eaters. It is a lovely way for your child to explore new textures and seasonal flavors in a relaxed setting.

Ingredients

  • 400 g potatoes (waxy or all purpose)
  • 300 g savoy cabbage (fresh, organic if possible)
  • 200 g mixed minced meat (or pure ground beef)
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 tbsp rapeseed oil
  • 100 ml vegetable broth (low sodium)
  • 100 ml cream or whole milk
  • 50 g grated cheese (such as mild Gouda or cheddar)
  • 1 pinch of nutmeg, a little black pepper, and mild herbs (like parsley)

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (conventional heat).
  2. Peel and wash the potatoes, then cut them into thin slices.
  3. Wash the savoy cabbage, remove the hard stalk, and cut the leaves into fine strips.
  4. Peel and finely dice the onion, then fry it together with the minced meat in a pan with rapeseed oil until fully cooked.
  5. Layer the potatoes and savoy cabbage in a baking dish and spread the minced meat mixture on top.
  6. Whisk the vegetable broth and cream with nutmeg, pepper, and herbs, then pour the liquid over the casserole.
  7. Sprinkle the grated cheese evenly over the top.
  8. Bake the casserole in the oven for about 35 to 40 minutes, until the potatoes are soft and the cheese is golden brown.
  9. Allow the dish to cool well before serving, and always check the temperature before your child takes the first bite.

Variations and Tips

  • Swap the vegetables: If your child is still warming up to savoy cabbage, you can use thin slices of carrots or kohlrabi instead.
  • Storage: The casserole keeps well in the fridge for up to two days when covered. It can also be frozen in portions and reheated in the oven as needed.
  • Adjust the texture: For younger siblings, you can slightly mash the potatoes and vegetables before baking to make the pieces softer.
  • Family tip: Adults can easily season their own portions at the table with a little extra pepper or a pinch of salt to suit their taste.

Allergy and Safety Information

  • This recipe contains dairy products (cream, cheese) and therefore the allergen cow's milk.
  • Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily observe any potential reactions.
  • Ensure that the minced meat is cooked through completely.
  • If you have any uncertainties about your child's diet or suspect an allergy, please always consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

This casserole provides valuable iron from the minced meat, which is important for blood formation and energy supply. The savoy cabbage adds a good portion of vitamin C and dietary fiber to support digestion. Milk and cheese also contribute calcium, which is highly beneficial for bone growth during this active stage of development.
