Juicy Meatballs with Mashed Potatoes and Creamed Spinach
Family meals are an important part of the daily routine. They offer time for conversations and a cozy get-together after a long day. Meatballs with mashed potatoes and creamed spinach are among the dishes that often evoke wonderful childhood memories. The preparation is straightforward and easily fits into everyday family life.
This classic dish brings a comforting atmosphere to the dining table and is a favorite in many homes. The soft texture of the mash and spinach, paired with juicy meatballs, is very easy for children aged three and up to chew. At the same time, this combination delivers important building blocks for growth, such as iron and high-quality protein.
Ingredients
For two to three portions, you will need the following ingredients. We recommend using organic products where feasible for your family.
For the mashed potatoes:
- 400 g floury potatoes
- 50 ml whole milk
- 1 tbsp butter
- A small pinch of nutmeg
For the meatballs:
- 250 g mixed minced meat (beef and pork)
- 1 small onion (very finely chopped)
- 2 tbsp breadcrumbs
- 1 small egg
- 1 tsp mild mustard
- A little canola oil for frying
- A pinch of salt and mild herbs to taste
For the creamed spinach:
- 200 g frozen leaf spinach (thawed and finely chopped)
- 2 tbsp heavy cream
- A small pinch of nutmeg
Instructions
- Peel the potatoes, cut them into small cubes, and gently boil them in water for about 15 to 20 minutes until soft.
- Meanwhile, thoroughly mix the minced meat, finely diced onion, breadcrumbs, egg, and mustard in a bowl. Form the mixture into small, flat meatballs.
- Heat the canola oil in a pan and fry the meatballs over medium heat until golden brown on both sides. Important note: Let the meat cook for about 10 to 12 minutes until it is completely cooked through on the inside.
- Gently warm the thawed spinach in a small pot. Stir in the cream and a pinch of nutmeg, then briefly bring everything to a gentle simmer.
- Drain the soft potatoes and let the steam escape for a moment. Add the milk and butter, then mash everything with a potato masher until you reach a smooth, creamy consistency.
- Plate the food and let it cool down slightly before serving. Always perform a temperature test before your child begins to eat.
Cooking Together Brings Joy
Children aged three and up often love helping out in the kitchen. For example, they can mash the cooled potatoes or help shape the meatballs. Such shared activities boost self-confidence and spark an interest in new foods. Having their own small stepping stool at the kitchen counter makes helping out especially safe and comfortable.
Variations and Tips
- Swap the vegetables: If your child is not fond of spinach, gently steamed peas or small carrot cubes are a wonderful alternative.
- Vegetarian option: The meatballs can easily be replaced with patties made from oats, grated zucchini, and cheese.
- Storage: Leftovers can be kept well-covered in the refrigerator for up to two days. The dish can also be frozen, though the mashed potatoes might lose a little creaminess after thawing.
- Family table: Parents can easily season their own meatballs at the table with a bit more salt, pepper, or spicy herbs.
