Introduction

This mild chili con carne is a true family favorite and is wonderfully suited for children around three years and older. It combines protein-rich beans with fine ground beef, providing valuable energy for active days. The gentle seasoning makes the dish very kid-friendly, while dipping with a baguette brings lots of joy to the dinner table.

Ingredients

For 2 to 3 portions, you will need:

  • 250 g ground beef (organic if possible)
  • 1 small onion
  • 1 clove of garlic
  • 400 g chopped tomatoes (1 can)
  • 150 g kidney beans (canned, well rinsed)
  • 100 g sweet corn (canned, well rinsed)
  • 1 tbsp canola oil or olive oil
  • 1 tsp sweet paprika powder
  • 0.5 tsp ground cumin
  • A small pinch of salt and pepper
  • 1 small baguette for serving

Preparation

  1. Peel the onion and garlic, and chop them into very fine cubes.
  2. Heat the oil in a large pot over medium heat, and sauté the onions and garlic until translucent.
  3. Add the ground beef and cook until crumbly and completely cooked through.
  4. Stir in the paprika powder and cumin, roasting them briefly.
  5. Add the chopped tomatoes, kidney beans, and corn, mixing everything well.
  6. Let the chili simmer gently over low heat for about 20 minutes until a slightly thick consistency is reached.
  7. Allow the dish to cool slightly before serving, and always test the temperature before your child takes the first bite.

Variations & Tips

  • Hiding veggies: You can easily fry a grated carrot or finely diced bell pepper along with the meat.
  • Storage: Leftovers keep well in an airtight container in the fridge for about two days and freeze beautifully.
  • For parents: Adults can sprinkle fresh chili flakes, a dollop of sour cream, or fresh cilantro over their portion at the table.
  • Adjusting texture: If your child is unsure about whole beans, you can lightly mash or puree them before cooking.

Allergy and Safety Notes

  • This recipe contains gluten through the served baguette.
  • When introducing new foods, offer them one at a time and in small amounts.
  • Ensure that the ground meat is always thoroughly cooked.
  • If you have any uncertainties about your child's diet or possible allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Info

This dish provides lots of valuable iron and plant-based protein thanks to the beef and beans. The tomatoes contain vitamin C, which additionally supports iron absorption in the body. Fiber from the corn and beans also ensures good satiety and healthy digestion for your child.
