Oven-Baked Churros with Chocolate Dip for Kids

Baking with kids2+y 40 min 4 VeggieMedium
Contains: Gluten, Dairy, Egg, Sugar

Introduction

These oven-baked churros are a wonderful baking project to share with children aged three and older. Piping the dough helps develop fine motor skills, while the mild chocolate dip is sure to bring bright smiles to the table. Families can easily enjoy a lower-fat version of the beloved Spanish classic right at home.

Ingredients

For the dough:

  • 125 ml water
  • 50 g butter (softened)
  • 1 tbsp coconut sugar (or mild raw cane sugar)
  • 75 g all-purpose flour (or spelt flour)
  • 2 eggs (medium)
  • 1 pinch of Ceylon cinnamon

For the chocolate dip:

  • 100 ml milk (or a plant-based alternative)
  • 50 g dark chocolate (at least 70% cocoa)
  • 1 tsp unsweetened cocoa powder

Preparation

  1. Preheat the oven to 200 degrees Celsius (top and bottom heat) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Bring the water, butter, and sugar to a boil in a small saucepan. Remove the pan from the heat and vigorously stir in the flour all at once until a smooth dough ball forms.
  3. Transfer the dough to a bowl and let it cool briefly. Then, using a hand mixer, beat in the eggs one at a time until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy.
  4. Fill the dough into a piping bag with a star nozzle and pipe strips of about 10 cm in length onto the baking sheet.
  5. Bake the churros in the preheated oven for 15 to 20 minutes until they are golden brown and crispy.
  6. For the dip, gently warm the milk in a small saucepan. Melt the chocolate and cocoa powder into it while stirring, until the dip is perfectly creamy.
  7. Let the churros and the dip cool down well before serving. Always do a quick temperature test before your child takes a bite.

Variations & Tips

  • Fruity alternative: Instead of the chocolate dip, an unsweetened applesauce or a homemade berry purée pairs beautifully with the baked churros.
  • Storage: The finished churros taste best fresh but can be kept in an airtight container in the fridge for one to two days. The raw dough can be piped into strips, frozen, and baked directly from the freezer when needed.
  • For the whole family: Adults can toss their baked churros in a mixture of cinnamon and a little extra sugar for a sweeter treat.

Allergy & Safety Information

This recipe contains eggs, milk, and wheat (gluten). Always introduce new ingredients one at a time and in small amounts to easily monitor for any reactions.

Avoid using honey as a sweetener for children under 12 months due to the risk of infant botulism. Whole nuts pose a choking hazard and must only be used finely ground or as a smooth nut butter. If you have any uncertainties regarding diet or potential allergies, please consult your pediatrician.

Nutritional Information

Thanks to the flour and eggs, this dish provides valuable carbohydrates and proteins for active children. Dark chocolate, when enjoyed in moderation, contains antioxidants and iron. It is a lovely, balanced treat that provides gentle energy for a busy afternoon.
